“Risk management: a culture not an event!”

Many mistakes in law firms which result in claims and complaints arise from simple administrative errors. Insurance agencies are observing increases in very large claims.

Although claims and complaints against most law firms are relatively rare, when they do happen the consequences can be severe. The potential loss to a firm is not limited to the size of a transaction, written-off fees or the firm’s own contribution to any damages paid.

The OCC Risk Management Core Group decided to tackle the larger task of raising the awareness of risk across their firms by developing the online Risk Management Suite. The OCC’s aim in the development of the suite is to improve a firm’s overall risk profile, by mitigating their risk in a wide array of ventures and environments.

The OCC now proudly offers a two hour Risk Management training solutions. The UK suite of courses comprises of five short courses including a new course entitled email@risk, which deals with managing the risks of email usage in a corporate environment.

UK Risk Management Suite


The UK OCC Risk Management Suite comprises four 30 minute courses:

  • Introduction to Risk Management
  • Risk Management - Conflicts
  • Risk Management - Client Engagement
  • Risk Management - Matter Management

These four courses have been approved for CPD accreditation for 0.5 points each. A lawyer must undertake at least two courses in the suite to be accredited with a full CPD point.

The HK Risk Management Review Course


The success of the UK Risk Management Course developed by 16 leading UK firms lead to the localisation of the course for Hong Kong firms. Accredited by the HK Law Society for 2 RME/CPD points raises the awareness of risk within a law firm, improving a firm’s overall risk profile.

email@risk Core Group


Bird & Bird, Herbert Smith ,Macfarlanes and Nabarros, supported the development of a specific course dealing with the risks of email usage in a professional setting. As email has become the primary communication medium these firms funded and oversaw the development of an innovative course training lawyers to mitigate the potential risks that email and Blackberry use,expose.
